Module Aims
|
To introduce the student, taking the Physics minor option, to the use of electronics: In particular to give students studying to be science teachers a strong grounding in both analog and digital electronics, with a significiant proportion of hands on laboratory work, including repair of equipment, building simple circuits etc.

Practical and theoretical competance and confidence in the areas of both analog and digital electronics, and real world applications of this technologyIn particular, students should have built simple electronic circuits, and located faults and fixed assorted pieces of lab equipment which required repair

Indicative Syllabus
|
ANALOG ELECTRONICS:· Passive circuit analysis, incl. resistor networks, RC, LC and LCR circuits and frequency dependance, Bode plots, Thevenin and Norton theorems, superposition etc.· Circuit components incl. diode and their operation, zeners, BJTs, FETs, use of transistors in amplifiers, small signal amplification.· PSU operation.· ICs incl. op-amps, negative feedback, various op-amp configurations for adding, multiplying etc.· Photodiodes and LEDs / LDs and associated electronic circuits.· Function generation.· Active circuits: noise, positive feedback & oscillators.· DA and AD convertors.DIGITAL ELECTRONICS:· Logic gates.· Karnaugh maps.· Flip-flops, counters.· State diagrams.· Introduction to computer structure.· Basis of assembly language.BASIC INTERFACING:· Use of QBASIC and I/O cards to perform simple interfacing.
