Description

To develop an understanding of the basic concepts of organic chemistry with emphasis on aliphatic chemistry. To understand and apply the IUPAC nomenclature system to name organic compounds. To consider the chemistry of a variety of organic functional groups: chemical tests that can be conducted to identify certain functional groups. To consider chemical reactions that convert between organic functional groups. To develop an understanding of reaction mechanism involved in organic chemistry. To build upon the concepts of physical chemistry (e.g. chemical thermodynamics and kinetics) introduced in CS101 to understand the concepts of acid-base, solubility and complexation equilibria.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand and apply the IUPAC nomenclature system for naming organic compounds.
2. Understand the chemistry of organic functional groups and predict chemical reactivities and properties based on such functionalities.
3. Understand organic reactions that convert from one functional group to another.
4. Develop an understanding of reaction mechanism in organic chemistry.
5. Identify strong acids, strong bases, weak acids, weak bases.
6. Distinguish between Brønsted, Arrhenius and Lewis theories of acids/bases.
7. Derive and manipulate equilibrium constant expressions.
8. Understand pH, pOH, acidity, basicity; predict solution pH, metal ion concentrations in titrations.
