Description

This module provides students with the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of medical and surgical conditions the Gastrointestinal, Neurological, Integumentary and Musculoskeletal systems. Students will consider the treatments and nursing care required by individuals with disorders of the Gastrointestinal, Neurological, Integumentary and Musculoskeletal systems and they will explore the nursing skills that are essential for their care. The psychological and social aspects of these conditions as well as of nursing care will also be considered. The module is delivered through a combination of lectures, clinical skills sessions and group tutorials.

Learning Outcomes

1. Outline the principles of medical, surgical conditions and management of acute and chronic conditions associated with the above disorders.
2. Describe the principles of caring for individuals with disorders of Gastrointestinal, Neurological, Integumentary and Musculoskeletal systems.
3. Perform the clinical skills deemed necessary for the nursing management of the above patient groups.
4. Identify the social and psychological aspects of these conditions and of the nursing care attached to them.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Biological aspects of disease:
Biological aspects of disease and particular conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, the neurological system, the integumentary system, and the musculoskeletal system.

The nursing care of individuals with conditions of the Gastrointestinal, Neurological, Integumentary and Musculoskeletal systems:
Use of the nursing process in providing appropriate care. Principles of medical and surgical procedures associated with the above conditions. Principles of acute and chronic care. Principles of pre and post operative care. Principles of wound care (acute and chronic), plaster care, pressure area care.

Psychological aspects of disease and nursing care.
