Description

This course introduces you to ideas and movements that have played a decisive part in the evolution of modern Germany. To practise basic techniques of textual analysis through discussion of short documentary and literary pieces, film and artwork representative of the ideas/periods covered. To extend your reading skills and vocabulary in a variety of registers and text types in German

Learning Outcomes

1. Discuss political and cultural factors which have shaped the development of the German nation-state up to the present day
2. Relate significant documents and literary texts of German cultural & political historical to the historical context in which they were written
3. Analyse the language and structures of literary and political discourse in German
4. Recognize and command linguistic usage in German in intermediate and advanced texts

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

The module, linked over two semesters, will consist of seminar classes based on introductory short lectures
The lectures, also provided on Moodle, will identify and survey significant periods and stages in German culture and history since the Reformation. It will not attempt continuous or comprehensive coverage but will offer insights into society and politics in Germany at selected points in its development: the influence of the Reformation, the Enlightenment and Romantic eras; the rise of nationalism and the movement towards unification in 1871; Germany on the eve of World War I; Weimar democracy and its enemies; 1945 and zero hour, division of Germany into East and West, Reunification and German society up to the present day. In Semester I analysis of short stories or other literary extracts and/or film, in German, produced in the German-speaking countries post 1945 and up to the reunification and its aftermath will be focused upon and students will be introduced to key terms associated with significant developments in German society. In Semester 2 German society from Romanticism to the rise of Nazism will be discussed in tandem with relevant literature, film and artwork.
