Module Aims | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
To introduce the student to a range of types of translation, with a view to providing a basic understanding of general translation practice.

Appreciate issues of register and text type etc. as they relate to the translation of texts.
Translate a limited range of general texts in certain fields from Japanese into English
Source and utilise appropriate background documentation of relevance to the task of translation.
Develop a basic understanding of the use of translation resources/aids in the production of translations.

Assume that a 5 credit module load represents approximately 75 hours' work, which includes all teaching, in-course assignments, laboratory work or other specialised training and an estimated private learning time associated with the module. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Indicative Syllabus | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Texts/topics to be covered may include:  Poetry/songs/fairytales  Tourist brochures/information  Authoritative/admin text, e.g. local authority, city administration, parking ticket, water rates- applications forms/qualifying criteria  Journalistic texts: weather forecasts, scientific/economic reports, short news bulletins, article summaries, film and book reviews etc.  Commercial correspondence, business letters, advertisements etc.  Relevant materials for translation, drawn from textbooks, popular science journals, newspapers, information booklets, Web pages, etc., will be used. Texts for translation will be between approx. 200-250 words in length. N.B. Monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, thesauri and student glossaries (printed or handwritten) are permitted. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
