Description This know-how and skill based module focuses on formal, academic and creative writing in German. Students will develop competence in analysing as well as composing highly specialised formal texts related to business, current affairs and politics as well as short fictional texts such as short stories, poems, plays, movie scripts and excerpts from novels. Students are to achieve a high degree of fluency, accuracy and range of expression in written production in the target language and to develop the ability to communicate in writing with ease and confidence in a range of professional and social situations. The exit level is B2.2 (as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Summarise and critically discuss short texts in German. 2. Assess the effectiveness and validity of arguments in written texts. 3. Produce short texts demonstrating a critical analysis of current topics and source texts. 4. Identify and reproduce structural elements of formal and informal German texts. 5. Indicative Content and
Learning Activities Creative and formal writingGeneral syllabus The module covers a range of activities that serve to mutually support and enhance the passive language skills (reading, listening comprehension) and the active skills (speaking, writing), as well as grammar (in so far as necessary) with an emphasis on written expression. Writing encompasses formal as well as creative writing. Seminar work will be supplemented by suitable additional material. Creative Writing includes preparatory reading of recent and contemporary German texts of various genres (including poetry, drama, film, prose). Formal Writing includes text-types such as formal emails, letters, reports, minutes, summaries and is informed by contemporary societal, political and cultural developments in German speaking countries. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
